HM Customs and Excise has been looking at career paths. Specific attention has been given to mapping out the development of tax professionals. The aim is to understand how their careers might grow through skill acquisition and professional qualification. We assisted HMCE by facilitating project workshops and giving expert input to their debate.
This project grew out of other work with HM Customs and Excise. It wished to address whether its IT staff were correctly remunerated and whether market supplements were appropriate. It became quickly apparent that any recruitment and retention difficulties would be best overcome by looking at career paths for these staff. This meant pay progression issues were considered not just market comparisons.
