Studying? a note for students

Doing a degree, or a professional qualification?

At college or school, with a essay or project to write?

We are frequently asked for advice on information sources and bibliographies by people in full- and part-time study. We’ve been there too, and we know what it’s like to be stuck or facing a deadline!

However, there just aren’t enough of us to answer all your individual queries. So please don’t email us for information on essays and dissertations. However, please do look around our publications summaries and research briefings and use the material freely, with acknowledgement.

Often your college or university librarian will know where to start, and if you want to borrow IES reports, they are available on inter-library loan, and are deposited with the British Library and specifically at the University of Sussex library.

Most frequently we are asked about statistics, many of which are available on the Internet, and a good place to start can be the National Statistics (formerly ONS).

National Statistics provides direct access to a range of official statistics. Use the search engine, accessible from the homepage.

Good luck with the studies, and keep watching the IES website!
