Celebrating 40 years of IES: a summer reception

celebrating 40 yearsAs part of the celebrations of our first 40 years, IES hosted a summer evening reception on 11 June 2008 for invited IES public policy, and HR stakeholders, partners and clients. This was more than a time to reminisce, rather an opportunity to network, to look ahead to the next 40 years and how IES will play a role alongside public policy makers and leading organisations.

Speakers at this event

  • Paul Milliken, HR Leader for UK, Shell in the UK (a founding organisation of the Institute of Manpower Studies, from which IES grew)
  • Sir Bill Callaghan, former Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission, and former Chief Economist of the TUC

Guests enjoyed traditional English garden party fare despite a lapse in the summer sunshine, with music performed by a woodwind trio, provided by the Royal College of Music.

The event was held at the Chelsea Physic Garden, which was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries.

This centre of research and conservation provided an interesting and relaxing venue. Private access during our event allowed our guests to have the opportunity to wander freely and experience this ‘Secret Garden’ in the heart of London.

The garden contains plants introduced into cultivation in Britain before the establishment of the Physic Garden by the Society of Apothecaries in 1673, and also contains the oldest fruiting olive tree in England, the perfumery and aromatherapy borders, and the plants that have been used for medicinal purposes.
