Knowledge Knibbles: Flexible working

Most organisations have developed policies to comply with the Right to Request flexible working but how many organisations are really getting all the business benefits that can flow from effectively implemented and managed flexible working – far fewer!

Having effective flexible working and a flexible workforce will save you money. You will reduce staffing cost through controlling sickness absence, staff turnover and persuading women to return from maternity leave. You will also hold onto your high fliers who, in any market, will have job opportunities and might be looking for something different – had you thought about flexible working as part of your talent management?

To achieve all this you need more than a well crafted policy. At IES we know that flexible workers tend to get poorer performance review outcomes despite managers anecdotal evidence that their flexible colleagues are very effective. We know that men tend to have their requests turned down more often than women and that a third of men would be interested in considering flexible working if they thought they would have their request seriously considered.

The result can be frustrated workers, confused managers and none of the business benefits you could achieve.
