(event complete)

Each year our retreat invites senior HR leaders to step aside and engage with each other over pressing issues facing organisational HR, with invited guest speakers and IES researchers. This year, in light of recent national and international economic fortunes, our theme is sustainable change. We will reflect upon change through structures, processes, culture and people, and how they interact. We will present case studies that illustrate how organisations have approached change through leading with each of these thematic headings. Participants will be able to reflect on their own experiences and hear how their peers have themselves led change and the challenges they have faced. IES will add its own research-based insights into organisational initiatives in dealing with economic crisis and institutional realignment.

Theme

In theory the economic recession is over, but there are precious few signs of pick-up and the public sector now faces major cutbacks. Uncertainty over the election result and the prospect of a hung Parliament is making the markets jittery and making planning in government awkward. Private sector HR Directors are still having to manage significant costs pressures yet increasingly thinking about retaining and, in some cases, acquiring talent. Public sector HR directors are having to consider innovative ways to meet a new funding landscape that requires more than tinkering at the edges. Will the result be short-term slash and burn, or the creation of more enduring organisational forms?

So when will we see a return to ‘normal’ business; or is there a ‘new normal’ emerging? How far have traditional HR concepts been challenged to be replaced by a new set of paradigms, or is this an illusion? And will this change be most clearly seen in new governance arrangements that require greater degrees of transparency and trust? Have we seen the start of a new era of flexibility and employee relations harmony, as the CBI claims, or have levels of employee engagement and trust plumbed new depths?

The IES Retreat will provide an opportunity for practitioners to reflect upon changing structures, processes, culture and people, and how they interact. We will explore them through organisational case studies and more academic input. Participants will be able to reflect on their own experiences and hear how their peers have themselves led change and the challenges they have faced.
