Trust in crisis: IES Annual Members’ Conference 2010

event type : Conference

an event for IES HR Network members

21 October 2010, 10.00am – 4.45pm (incl. lunch)
West One
9-10 Portland Place, Oxford Circus, London W1B 1PR

The banking crisis has increased awareness of themes that seemed a little old-fashioned in the heady days of economic buoyancy: trust, integrity and honesty. Research repeatedly shows that employees value managers and leaders who demonstrate these qualities, and want to work for an organisation that embodies them, while the public has heightened suspicion of companies whose actions seem at odds with their stated values. With ethical companies thriving in the recession, honesty now makes sound commercial sense. Transparency is no longer an option, but an imperative: organisations that do not follow due process run the real risk of failing. The principles of good governance need to permeate the whole organisation, which requires an increased emphasis on listening to employees, valuing their contribution, and ensuring they are well managed. Honesty really is the best policy.

Attend this conference to hear from experts and case study speakers, network with fellow senior professionals, and join the debate about trust and integrity in the workplace.

Specific sessions cover:

  • adopting the right behaviours throughout the organisation, starting at the very top
  • why a culture of trust, backed up by actions, is essential to bring about change effectively
  • perspectives on the employee-employer partnership, which, judging by increased industrial unrest, appears to be breaking down
  • how a clear conscience liberates the workplace and fosters high performance.

Programme

10:00 Arrive, and coffee
10:30 Welcome and introduction Nigel Meager, Director, IES
10:45 Getting it right at the top: behaviours in the boardroom Stephen Haddrill, Chief Executive, Financial Reporting Council
What happens in the boardroom gives a clear behavioural message to the rest of the organisation. The emphasis seems to be changing in corporate governance, from compliance to selfless stewardship – openness and probity in the interests of the organisation.
11:30 Trusting in change: integrity in the workplace David de Cremer, visiting Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School and Professor of Behavioural Business Ethics at Rotterdam School of Management
With change is so much a part of working life, it is becoming increasingly important to nurture a trusting relationship between employer and employee. Rebuilding trust, after getting things wrong, is an uphill process requiring resilience and determination.

12:15 Lunch
13:15 Whatever happened to partnership in employee relations? Tom Wilson, Director of unionlearn, the TUC’s learning and skills organisation, with case study speakers from public and private sectors
John Hallett, HR Director, ER and Reward, Lloyds Banking Group
Partnership looked like the answer – unions and management working together for the good of the organisation. Does the current wave of industrial unrest signify that partnership is a fair-weather concept, or are its principles still embedded in organisations with a track record of genuine employee involvement?
14:45 Tea and table talk Discussion time
Trust, integrity and honesty: the only way for a right-thinking organisation to behave, a short-lived fad, or hard-nosed business sense? Does it/would it work for you? How well does your Board behave, and is your senior executive team known for its integrity? Should HR be the guardian of the organisation's conscience, and increase its employee champion role?
15:30 Banking on integrity: fostering a clear conscience culture in the workplace Greg Horton, Managing Director, Fairbairn Private Bank
Trust has plummeted in the banking world, with well-known high street names being pilloried in the press and by the public. In some banks, however, employees can still hold their heads high and adhere to a strong moral code, with a positive impact on engagement and performance.
16:15 Questions to speakers and contributions from table talk Duncan Brown, IES, facilitator
16:40 Closing remarks Nigel Meager, IES

16:50 Close
