National survey of the quality of working life

celebrating 40 yearsAs part of a series of high-profile activities to mark the Institute’s first 40 years, we are undertaking a national survey of the quality of working life in the UK.

The quality of working life is important for a number of reasons. It certainly relates to employee engagement and directly to performance. It also contributes to employer brand, and therefore recruitment and retention of high-potential employees. Beyond that, it is of national interest, as we question whether our future lies in the constant increase of economic performance or in other routes to social development, general happiness or contentment and non-economic improvement in life and equality.

The quality of working life can be measured and compared year on year, and also used for organisational benchmarking. We will be using a survey instrument developed and piloted by IES with support from the Sector Skills Development Agency.

The research

Benefits of sponsorship

IES stands out as a leading, not-for-profit, independent centre for research and knowledge in all aspects of employment. Sponsors for this survey will be forward-thinking organisations for whom issues of healthy workplaces and the quality of working life are important. This survey will achieve a high media profile for IES and its sponsors, in its own right and as part of our 40th year profile.

Our sponsors will also have the opportunity to run the survey in house and benchmark the quality of working life in their own organisations.

The survey measures a broad range of factors, including:

  • leadership
  • management
  • working conditions
  • rewards
  • skills and prospects
  • relations at work
  • nature of work
  • organisation of work

The published results will show what makes for a healthy and productive workplace and the benefits that accrue. To do this we are inviting several leading organisations to share in sponsorship through financial support.

To do this, we are inviting several leading organisations to share in sponsorship through modest financial support and a demonstration of the importance of this national study.
