Institute for Employment Studies appoints new Associate Director

15 October 2010

Dr Penny Tamkin rejoins IES from The Work Foundation to focus on leadership

Dr Penny Tamkin has re-joined the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) this month as Associate Director, after three years as Programme Director of People Effectiveness at The Work Foundation.

Penny has recently been leading a major research project on leadership, talking to some of the UK’s major employers. This project has helped identify clear factors that differentiate outstanding leaders from good ones. She has also conducted numerous studies into leadership its impact, including an evaluation of skills utilsation and high performance working for the UK Commission on Employment, and evaluations of the impact of leadership development for several employers. She has over a decade of experience in this area.

Nigel Meager, Director of the Institute for Employment Studies, comments:

‘We are very pleased to welcome Penny back to the Institute for Employment Studies. Raising the competence and capability of leaders remains a key priority for many organisations, and Penny is working with a team of experts to turn research findings into practical and effective interventions.’

Penny Tamkin comments:

‘Organisations are under enormous strains and pressures, both in the public sector and private sector, and the competence and capability of their senior leaders has never been more scrutinised. Outstanding leadership is the only way to sustainably enable people to give of their best and drive innovation, performance and deliver competitve advantage. But what makes great leaders in one organisation will not necessarily create them in another; organisations need solutions that are bespoke to their organisation, and that see leadership in the wider context of their situation.’
