Board effectiveness reviews: the people issues12 October 2011 On Friday 18th November, the Institute for Employment Studies and Eversheds will host a breakfast briefing, for both HR leaders and Company Secretaries, which will cover the main ‘people issues’ that arise in board effectiveness reviews. Increasing numbers of companies are evaluating the effectiveness of their Boards. From September 2011, the UK Corporate Governance Code (2010) will require all FTSE 350 companies to conduct externally facilitated evaluations, at least every three years. It is common ground that a desirable outcome is a specific and measurable action plan, but there is considerable variation in how the evaluation is performed and who undertakes it. Typically, the Chairman and the Company Secretary lead this exercise. But many of the issues raised by an evaluation are the concern of HR – for example, the culture of the board and the behaviours of its members, as well as talent management and succession. Programme
