Constructing Better Health

Construction workers have some of the highest rates of work-related illness of all occupational groups, estimated at 2.9 million working days lost in 2003-04. A further 1 million days were lost due to workplace injury within the industry. The construction industry is therefore a key target for the HSC/HSE in improving the health and safety of people at work. Through the combined work of the construction industry and the HSE, the Constructing Better Health pilot was launched to test out a model of delivery within the industry, taking forward HSE's recommendations on the provision of occupational health support. IES was commissioned to evaluate the pilot scheme in Leicester, prior to national rollout.
