Routes onto Employment and Support Allowance

This study was carried out for the DWP’s health, work and well-being team. It is complementary to the evaluation of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), but while the ESA evaluation looked at the experience of claiming ESA, the Routes onto ESA study wass more concerned with people’s experiences before claiming this benefit. Were they in work or on another benefit? Had they been ill for a long period, or have they recently developed a health condition? Could their employers have done more to help them stay in work? This project helped answer these questions and provide longer-term work and health trajectories for people claiming ESA.
