Writing for the IES Perspectives on HR 2017 series of essays, Peter Reilly, Principal Associate, offers a discussion of the Ulrich structural model and considers how robust this model will be for the future. This essay is a follow-up to Peter's 2011 essay in this series of reports, where he considered HR's service delivery model and critically analysed the Ulrich model.

In this year's essay, Peter first identifies potential issues with the HR function's Ulrich structural model before considering several upcoming environmental issues, such as the impact of technology and workforce composition, that may pose challenges to Ulrich's structural model.
