Engineering is the least gender and ethnically diverse of all the great professions, according to a new report that accuses the sector of inflicting a brain drain because of “stereotyping, isolation and bias” on and against anyone who is not white and male.

While the industry is known for being poor at attracting women and employees from minorities, in an indictment of the pledges of successive governments to act, the report reveals it also has a rotten record in retaining them when they join. The report from Atkins, the consulting engineer, concludes that the profession is guilty of wasting talent and time spent training.
