In line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), in this privacy notice for research participants, we explain the legal basis for data processing for this research investigating young people’s decision-making around future jobs and careers. This includes who will have access to your personal data, how this data will be used, stored and deleted and who you can contact with any queries or complaints.
Who we are
The research is being undertaken by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) on behalf of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) for purposes connected with the Construction Industry Training Board’s (CITB) role as an Industrial Training Board in accordance with the Industrial Training Act 1982. For the purpose of data protection legislation, CITB is the data controller for the personal data processed as part of the research. This means they are responsible for deciding the purpose and legal basis for processing personal data.
Why our use of your data is lawful
For our use of your personal data to be lawful, we need to be able to rely on a condition for processing under the UK General Data Protection Legislation (also known as the ‘GDPR’).
CITB processes your data on the basis that the “processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of official authority vested in the data controller” (Article 6(1)(e) of the GDPR).

How will my data be treated?
The research with young people aged 14 to 18 will explore their career plans and how they make decisions about their future jobs or careers. It will also investigate their understanding of self-employment, their views on its benefits and drawbacks, and what support or information they would need to understand it better. Discussion will also focus on careers and self-employment in the construction industry, including where young people get their knowledge from. The discussion will also cover jobs and careers in other industries and, more generally, careers.
If you are invited and choose to take part in a research discussion, the information you give will only be used for purposes of this study. Please be aware that, if contacted, you are under no obligation to take part in the research.
We use CoPilot, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool secured within our encrypted IT system, to support our analysis of anonymised data. It is used as a support tool to assist with organising data by theme, but does not replace human analysts’ judgement, as all AI outputs are subject to human checks by members of the research team prior to full analysis being undertaken. With large volumes of data, we use it to help identify patterns and themes within research data, again with full scrutiny from human analysts.
We will only use the IES-embedded version of CoPilot for this analysis support, which has been approved for use after careful risk assessment to ensure it meets our security and data protection requirements, and we have implemented safeguards, including access controls, encryption and researcher training. All data is kept securely on IES servers, which means it is not accessible on the internet. We do not store your personal data with the transcript from your interview.
A report summarising the findings will be published at the end of the project. Individuals will not be named in the reports, nor will any information be included that could reveal their identity.
The nature of the personal data we will be using
The following information will be collected by IES for the purpose of the evaluation:
- Your name
- Your email address
- Your age
- Your gender identity
- Your ethnic background
- The region you live in
- Your current activity (work or study)
- Your socio-economic background
- Whether you have a health condition or disability
- Interview answers
Who will have access to my personal information?
Data will be collected by Angelfish Fieldwork for the purposes of recruiting participants for this research. They also follow strict data protection procedures, and their privacy notice can be found at the following link: Privacy Policy – Angelfish Fieldwork. This data will be securely transferred to IES and used by us to contact you and for our data analysis.
IES will collect additional data through the research discussion, should you choose to take part, which will be used for research purposes only.
If you are a young person aged 14-15, the information given may be shared with your family or legal guardian who consented to your participation in the research study.
How long will you keep my personal data?
We will only keep your personal data for as long as we need it for the purpose(s) of this piece of work, after which point it will be securely destroyed. Your personal data will be deleted from the IES systems six months after the project is complete and the final report has been published (the project is currently estimated to end in Spring 2027).
The research team will process your data in accordance with data protection law, which includes keeping it secure and only using it where there is a fair and lawful basis to do so.
What say do I have in this?
You do not have to provide any information that you do not want to.
You have the right to withdraw the information you have provided as part of the interviews within fourteen (14) days of your interview date. If you have taken part in an interview but would like to withdraw your information, please contact: [email protected]
CITB will hold your personal data in accordance with the CITB Privacy Notice, and any request to delete your personal data will be processed in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Notice, which can be found online at www.citb.co.uk/privacy-policy
Furthermore, under the GDPR, you have several rights as an individual, even after you have given the information and consented to it being used for research purposes.
You have the right:
- to ask us for access to information about you that we hold
- to have your personal data rectified, if it is inaccurate or incomplete
- to request the deletion or removal of personal data where there is no compelling reason for its continued processing
- to restrict our processing of your personal data (i.e. permitting its storage but no further processing)
- to object to direct marketing (including profiling) and processing for the purposes of scientific/historical research and statistics
- not to be subject to decisions based purely on automated processing where it produces a legal or similarly significant effect on you
