Tackling burnout

13:00 - 14:00
Online Event - Exclusively for HR Network members

Although ‘burnout’ has been a feature of several high-intensity occupations for many years, awareness of its impact and seriousness has only recently become prominent, and largely because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Burnout is clinically and conceptually different from depression or anxiety and it is widely recognised as being a mostly work-related phenomenon. It can affect anyone, and it can also be more prevalent among those people who have historically been high-performers. Understanding which people and which job roles may be most vulnerable to burnout can be challenging but important. And developing strategies to spot the underlying causes and to do something about them is becoming a major priority in many organisations where employees are working at high levels of intensity.

Event Summary

This event, led by Stephen Bevan, will describe the main characteristics of burnout, explore some of its causes and suggest some approaches to preventing and managing it effectively. It will include a summary of what we know from the latest research, and it will give participants the opportunity to describe the approaches being taken in their own organisations.

We will examine:

  • Definitions of burnout
  • Causes of burnout and how to spot them
  • Consequences of burnout for the individual & the organisation
  • Preventing and mitigating the effects of burnout as part of your workplace wellbeing strategy
