Effective talent and succession management: framework and practical tips
We at IES advise many organisations on talent management and succession planning. Our research activities in this area and regular discussions with leading employers keep us abreast of latest thinking and also generate insights into what works in practice.
We offer some suggestions in our latest Practical Tips document, which gives the practitioner two elements on just two sides of paper:
A framework for thinking about your own approach suggests five key aspects of talent and succession management to consider: Purposes; Populations of jobs/people to be covered; Principles; Processes for identifying and developing potential and Players, ie who is responsible for different aspects of the process and for different populations in scope.
Ten Practical Tips for developing and implementing a successful approach. These include how to involve the line, how to define potential or ‘talent’ and how to integrate talent and succession management with other aspects of people management.
Our hope is that the framework and tips will help you move towards a ‘best fit’ approach which really meets your organisation’s needs and makes sense to line managers and employees.
For a report with more detail and many examples of practice see Talent Management, A Four-Step Approach (2013) Campbell V, Hirsh W, IES report 502.

IES Perspectives on HR 2015: HR in a disordered world
In this year’s edition of IES Perspectives on HR, we preview some of the themes that will crop up later in 2015, either in Briefings and Workshops, or which we will explore further in our signature events such as our Conference, Provocation and Retreat. These themes acknowledge some of the difficulties for the HR function of the disordered, turbulent world in which we operate. Several of our contributors
have looked at change itself and how the function steers itself through change or how it helps others do so.
