Clare joined IES as a research officer in December 2014 before becoming a Research Fellow in 2016. Her main interests include equality and diversity issues, the Higher and Further Education sectors, and health and wellbeing at work. Clare draws upon experience of working on equality and diversity issues in both policy and research contexts, having worked for equality charities, research consultancies and the National Union of Students.
After completing a PhD in psycholinguistics at the University of Edinburgh, she has used a range of quantitative and qualitative skills. Particular specialisms include quantitative analysis including workforce data, management information and survey data; survey design, analysis and management; and qualitative research on sensitive topics such as wellbeing and health.
Clare has extensive knowledge of the higher education sector including both staff and students. Her research experience comprises a diverse range of projects for a variety of clients such as the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Department for Education. Research themes include: student finances and wellbeing; modes of, and motivations for, study; mental health experiences among postgraduate research students; and the experiences and decision-making of EU staff currently working in the UK.
She is also an experienced researcher in the area of health and wellbeing. Clare led analysis of management information as part of an evaluation of the Fit for Work Service and the use of Return to Work plans for the Department for Work and Pensions. She has interviewed employers and users of a Wellbeing Through Work programme for Remploy, and interviewed carers and cared-for individuals to develop case studies to evaluate pilot programmes supporting carers in employment (SCIE). Clare has also managed a multi-method evaluation of mental health training for new recruits to the emergency services including longitudinal surveys, interviews and case studies for the mental health charity Mind.
