This privacy notice explains how personal data will be used as part of the Trussell research workshops on employment support and social security.

What is the legal basis for processing my data?

The legal basis for processing personal data for this research is legitimate interest and research in the public interest, in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Your participation is voluntary, and any consent you give to take part can be withdrawn at any time.

Who is responsible for my data?

Trussell are the data controller for this research. This means it is responsible for deciding how your personal data is used and kept safe.

The research is being carried out on Trussell’s behalf by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), which will only access anonymised research information or minimal contact details needed to run the workshops.

What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of the research is to understand how employment support and social security systems work in practice and how they affect people’s lives, so that policies and rules can be improved. The research focuses on experiences at a systems level and is not designed to collect detailed personal histories or sensitive personal data.

What personal data will be collected?

Trussell will need to collect only minimal personal data needed to organise the workshops, such as your name and contact details (for example, your email address).

We do not collect your social security records, National Insurance numbers, administrative data from government departments, or detailed personal histories or documents.

Researchers from IES will take anonymised written notes during workshops and an audio recording to support note taking. These notes will not include names or identifying details.

Who will have access to my data?

Access to your data is limited to authorised staff at the Trussell and members of the research team at the Institute for Employment Studies (IES).

No information will be shared with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Jobcentre Plus, or any other government department.

How will my data be used?

Your data will be used only for research purposes, including organising and running the workshops, analysing themes from discussions, and producing anonymised reports. Results will be presented in a way that does not identify individuals. Anonymous quotes may be used.

How will my data be stored and protected?

All data will be stored securely, accessed only by the research team, and protected in line with data protection law.

How long will my data be kept?

Identifying information and research notes will be securely deleted 6 months after the end of the project, currently expected in September 2026.

What rights do I have?

You have the right to choose not to provide any information you do not want to share, withdraw from the research at any time, and ask for information you have shared to be removed where possible.
