ICT Strategy, Disabled People and Employment in the UK

This paper focuses on the application of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) in helping disabled people enter and remain in employment in the UK, and in particular on the nature and extent of any national ICT and/or disability strategies in this area. The paper is based on a review of the limited academic literature and relevant policy documents available in this area, together with semi-structured expert interviews with a small number of key informants in the ICT field, in disability organisations and government.

Organisations’ Responses to the Disability Discrimination Act

This report explores organisations' awareness of and responses to the Disability Discrimination Act, looking particularly at issues relating to employment, provision of goods, facilities and services, public functions and private clubs. The research builds on a similar study undertaken in 2003, and is based on 2,000 telephone interviews and 50 case studies. A separate technical report outlining the methodological approach and the research design is available from the DWP.

UK National Public Policy Initiatives and Regulations Affecting Disabled People’s Labour Market Participation

This paper presents the contribution of IES to the second stage of a research project on disability and employment, supported by the Norwegian Work Research Institute, with funding from the Norwegian Research Council. The research involves a comparison of three contrasting sectors (construction, ICT and health) in Norway, the UK and the Netherlands. This report aims to provide an overview of the UK national public policy initiatives and regulations which affect the participation of disabled people in the labour market.

Mapping the Wider Care Workforce

This expert paper explores the nature and dynamics of the wider care workforce. In doing so, it considers the expected expanded contribution by the voluntary sector, community organisations and charities, and social enterprises, alongside users and their carers. It goes on to explore issues of gender, age, ethnicity, qualifications and other background descriptors of the wider care workforce.

The Labour Market Participation and Employment of Disabled People in the UK

This paper represents the contribution by the Institute for Employment Studies to the first stage in a research project on disability and employment, supported by the Norwegian Work Research Institute through a contract from the Norwegian Research Council. The research involves a comparison of disability in three contrasting sectors - construction, ICT and health - in three countries - Britain, the Netherlands and Norway.

New Deal for Disabled People

This report presents the main findings from a representative national survey of nearly 1,500 employers who had recruited individuals registered under the New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP) during the period July 2002 to July 2003. It aimed to provide a quantitative assessment of the nature and scale of employer involvement with the programme, as a complement to two waves of qualitative research with employers (undertaken in 2002 and 2003).

Employers and the New Deal for Disabled People – Qualitative Research, Second Wave

The New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP) was a major labour market programme for disabled people who wanted to find work. It formed a key part of the government's Welfare to Work strategy. This report sets out the findings from the second wave of qualitative research with employers. At the time the research was carried out, NDDP had been operating nationally for two years.

Post-16 Transitions: a Longitudinal Study of Young People with Special Educational Needs (Wave Two)

This second wave of longitudinal research with young people with special educational needs (SEN) records and tracks their progress as they moved from compulsory schooling to early adulthood. This study reports the experiences of young people two years after they completed statutory schooling.

Qualifications Bodies and the Disability Discrimination Act

Part 2 of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 was extended to cover organisations which conferred, renewed or extended a professional or trade qualification. If a provision, criterion or practice of a qualifications body placed a disabled person at a substantial disadvantage in getting or retaining a qualification, then the qualifications body would have a duty to make a 'reasonable adjustment' for a disabled person.
