Monitoring the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995: Phase 3

This report presents the findings of research by the Institute for Employment Studies on behalf of the Disability Rights Commission in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions and the Equality Commission, Northern Ireland. The research, conducted during the period October 2002 to May 2003, is the third phase of a series of studies monitoring the implementation of the DDA.

Evaluation of the Disabled Person’s Tax Credit (DPTC): A Survey of Recipients

This report sets out the results from a representative survey of 1,315 recipients of the Disabled Person's Tax Credit (DPTC) conducted during the summer and autumn of 2001. It forms part of a comprehensive programme launched by the Revenue to monitor and evaluate Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) and DPTC. This report considers the socio-demographic characteristics of DPTC recipients. It then looks in turn at recipients' initial engagement with DPTC, at DPTC provisions and childcare, and at the re-application process.

Employers and the New Deal for Disabled People – Qualitative Research, First Wave

This publication is no longer available. This report contributed to the national evaluation of the New Deal for Disabled People (NDDP). It sets out the first results from research on employer awareness of, and involvement with NDDP. Other linked studies contributed evidence on other stakeholders, particularly customers of the programme and the job brokers delivering it.

Childcare, 16-19 Year Old Parents and Further Education

This publication is no longer available. A key part of Government education and training policy is the encouragement of more people from low income families and disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in further education. The provision of student support is a central part of the policy. It is recognised that different groups of young people experience particular barriers and difficulties when accessing further education. One group in which there is considerable interest is 16-19 year old parents and childcare has been found to be a major barrier for these parents.

Costs and Benefits to Service Providers of Making Reasonable Adjustments under Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act

This report presents the findings of a UK-wide survey and case studies of service providers in scope of Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act. The research examines the extent to which establishments are making reasonable adjustments for disabled customers under Part III of the Act, and the costs and benefits of making such adjustments.

How Employers and Service Providers are Responding to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995

This report presents findings of research conducted with employers and service providers, which examined how they were responding to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Based on a telephone survey and in-depth case studies, the research explores responses to the Act in the areas of recruitment, employment, service provision, making adjustments for disabled customers/employees, and awareness of the Act and sources of advice and information. The research was conducted by researchers at SWA Consulting Ltd with Scantel International, and includes further analysis by the Institute for Employment Studies.

Barriers to Employment for Disabled People

This report presents findings of a survey conducted with 2,008 employers aimed at identifying and examining the barriers to employment which disabled people face. The study compares findings with earlier research conducted amongst employers, to chart transitions over time, and explores three key areas: the existence and nature of policies relating to the employment of disabled people; employers' practices with regard to disabled people in the workplace; and employers' awareness of and responses to government initiatives and legislation, in particular the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
