Diverse organisations

5 April

Mary Mercer will lead an examination of the systems and processes that prevent organisations from becoming truly diverse: from inequality in performance management outcomes and the application of flexible working, to networking and relying on ‘who you know’ to get on. It will examine what organisations should consider to be really committed to diversity.

Beautiful jobs

9 May

Job design has shifted towards an attempt to create jobs that engage, that provide the opportunity to fully apply skills and enthusiasm, and that maximise autonomy. These are the characteristics associated with high-performance working. The problem is how does an organisation create these kinds of jobs, when there is so much tedious work to be done? In truth, organisations have struggled to do so, and jobs in the UK have tended to decline in some key characteristics such as autonomy and influence. This workshop will explore how organisations think about job design and how they do it in practice.

Learning from lean

11 July

Lots of organisations have used business improvement methods, but have they solved the problem? Have processes become smarter, slicker and cheaper? Are there new problems that have arisen in their wake or never really got tackled? This workshop will examine what might be the main impediments to people productivity, how lean etc. can help, but what other, especially behavioural, interventions might also be necessary.

Career development: The heart of talent management

24 September

Organisations implementing talent management strategies rapidly find themselves in the territory of career development and need to ask themselves about the career aspirations and constraints of their people and think about talent pools, career paths, international mobility and line management capability to manage talent and careers. Wendy Hirsh will pose the questions and help find some answers.

Organisation effectiveness: A new approach for OD?

8 October

In this highly participative workshop, using a case study with Organisation Effectiveness (OE) diagnostic tools and models, Paul Fairhurst will explore what OE is; how it differs from Organisation Development, and the role of the ‘people function’ in its development. There will then be the opportunity to work through your own organisational challenges through peer coaching. Participants will also have the opportunity to consider their own skill and knowledge set.

Intergeneration

21 November

Do different generations of employees really want different experiences from their employers? Is it possible to have a team comprising Baby Boomers and Generation Y’ers? And how do you reward employees whose needs and work expectations are so different? Or are we more alike than we like to think? This masterclass examines the reported differences between the generations and the strategies that different organisations have put in place to cater for everyone’s wants and expectations.

Metrics that matter

12 December

Metrics can prove the value of the people in the organisation in terms of the kind of performance metrics that leaders notice. They can focus effort, inform activity and drive improvement. They should be in the toolkit of every HR function and we should all understand what key metrics are worth keeping an eye on. This masterclass will focus on the metrics that matter, the ones that link most closely to business performance and show how these can be collected, manipulated and put to use.
