Learning Agreement Pilots Evaluation

The evaluation had three elements: a process evaluation, examining the ways in which the Learning Agreement Pilots had been set up and delivered, and the main issues associated with their implementation; a quantitative element, using surveys of young people to measure the impact of the pilots in comparison to control areas and to provide information about participants’ experiences; and a programme theory element, testing some key aspects of the policy to identify what worked, what did not and the reasons for this.

Employee Engagement: What is the Relationship with Reward Management?

This paper (published as ‘Reward and Engagement’, in WorldatWork Journal, November 2008) sets out the relationship between reward and employee engagement as a valid and powerful area for future research and practice in reward management. It considers what employee engagement really means and why it is important (primarily because of the potentially powerful influence on organisation performance). The paper presents a review of research evidence on the complex relationship between reward and engagement, and provides guidelines for practising a more engagement-focused approach.

Where Next for HRM?

This working paper argues that HR needs to review the focus of its contribution to ensure that it retains distinctiveness and so adds real value. The author reasons that HRM needs to reconsider its roots in people management and its unique selling point, which is based in a broader and more pluralistic definition of the subject. This paper was commissioned by IES as part of its Visiting Fellows scheme, marking the Institute's 40th anniversary.
