Careers in Organisations: Issues for the Future

Drawing on a series of 12 one-day workshops run for IES subscriber organisations, with a total of over 150 participants from 65 different organisations, this report set out to review the career issues that organisations were facing in the mid 1990s and to provide a perspective on how organisations could develop their career management strategies for the future. The experience of living with the possibility of redundancy, and watching others leave, has become part of the working experience of many UK employees. Whatever the corporate rationale, this 'downsizing' is a personal rather than a bottom-line issue for those who survive it and who are ultimately responsible for the newly structured business's future success. Talk of 'survivor syndrome' in the popular press has highlighted the dangers of generating a new breed of alienated employee, devoid of loyalty and commitment. Teachers: Recruitment and the Labour Market

This report looks at the relationship between the supply of teachers to the teaching profession, the state of the labour market and pay levels. It comprises a review of existing information on the supply of teachers, and the findings from a statistical modelling exercise looking at some of the influences on the proportion of graduates entering teaching between 1986 and 1992. Employment of Homeworkers: Examples of Good Practice

This working paper provides an overview of the most important aspects of the employment and working conditions of homeworkers, including home-based teleworkers, and of the legal provisions that exist in different countries. It also gives concrete examples of how such provisions can best be applied in practice or, in the absence of specific regulations, of what would constitute good practice.

Measuring and Monitoring Absence from Work

Research shows that improvements in employee attendance can be achieved through a combination of senior management commitment, clear responsibilities, appropriate information, trained line managers, and attention to staff welfare. This report is concerned with the third of these success factors: the provision of accurate, timely and accessible information. It explains how to calculate, and when to use, a wide variety of absence measures.

This publication is no longer available. This report, commissioned by the Employment Department, looks at employers’ views of education business links. It examines why and how employers get involved with education and what sort of activities they prefer. It draws out implications for employers, education links agencies and policy bodies, and concludes that the supply of links from the employer side is not a significant constraint in developing a higher level of activity.
