Occupational Hygiene at the Olympic Park and Athletes’ Village

This project was commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and conducted by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) with the support of the occupational hygienists from Park and Village Health. These occupational hygienists worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team providing Occupational Health support during the construction of the Olympic Park and Athletes’ Village.

The paper was developed by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills Leadership and Management Network Group (LMNG) and is aimed at business intermediaries and representative bodies that offer business support and advice. It puts forward the arguments for business investment in leadership and management skills, based on evidence about current practice and the UK’s position relative to key competitor nations.

Flexicurity: Actions at Company Level

This report examines initiatives that could be considered as flexicurity measures, developed by companies to support women, young workers and older workers. The purpose is to show that even if the measures are introduced for business reasons and are not the result of a deliberate company flexicurity strategy, many may be considered as flexicurity measures as they contribute to improving both flexibility and security of vulnerable workers. On the basis of 16 company case studies in six EU Member States – the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and the United Kingdom – the study examines the motives of companies for developing these actions and the lessons learned.

Expanding and Improving Part-time Higher Education

A report on research that explores whether part-time undergraduate study in England can be expanded as an alternative for young students (those aged 22 and under) to the full-time three to four year model of first degree undergraduate participation. The report also looks at how undergraduate part-time students of all ages can be encouraged and supported with their studies.
