In 2015, The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) commissioned IES to enhance their understanding of the 'customer journey' - the experience of those who register an interest in, and progress towards, Initial Teacher Training (ITT) - in order to identify where changes can best be made to maximise efficient and cost-effective recruitment to ITT.

The IES research looked at several key areas of the 'customer journey' including:

  • The motivations and reasons for wanting to become a teacher;
  • the importance of developing an understanding of the full range of ITT options;
  • the barriers impairing the customer journey; and
  • the impact of individuals' commitments and personal situations on their ability complete the 'customer journey'.
