This paper is second in a series on coaching effectiveness. A total of 644 industry professionals who were current or former coachees responded to a questionnaire. In this paper we identify barriers faced by coachees during the period of their coaching and suggest a categorisation framework:

  • Difficulties with coach
  • Organisational culture
  • Personal issues
  • Coaching relationship
  • Coaching model/process.

We found significant differences in coachees’ perceptions of coaching effectiveness based on whether or not individuals took part in coaching voluntarily. We also found differences in barriers reported based on respondents’ gender, country of residence and organisation size.
