The previous decade saw a substantial growth in postgraduate study, mainly at masters degree, but also latterly at postgraduate diploma levels.

It was increasingly used as part of professional or vocational training and its traditional role as a first step to an academic career had declined.

Despite many changes, major differences in supply remained between disciplines and their labour markets.
