Outsourcing: a Flexible Option for the Future?

Reilly P, Tamkin P | Report 320 | Institute for Employment Studies | Dec 1996

What is outsourcing; how common is it? Why do organisations outsource activities? What are the advantages and disadvantages? And how can one best manage the outsourcing process? What are the implications for employees?

This report was published at a time of continuing employer appetite for flexible work arrangements, set against a background of legal and political uncertainty.

It sets out arguments for and against outsourcing, and emphasises the need for careful evaluation of the benefits to be found, and the risks involved. It is based on in-depth interviews in the private and public sectors, together with a review of the literature.
