This paper provides an overview of the current position regarding Assistant Practitioners within the NHS. Assistant Practitioners occupy an intermediate position just below the level of professionally qualified staff but usually above Health Care Assistants.

The paper starts by outlining the background to introduction of these posts and their current qualification requirements, and then goes on to consider the factors that have contributed to introduction of these roles, and the challenges and debates regarding their introduction. It concludes by identifying the main current issues that will need to be addressed and resolved.
