Stress: Big Issue, but what are the Problems?

Rick J, Hillage J, Honey S, Perryman S | Report 331 | Institute for Employment Studies | Jun 1997

Does the increase in reports of stress reflect increased experience of stress, or increased awareness of stress as a concept that can explain features of our everyday life?

How accurately can the costs to employers be assessed, and how should organisations manage stress related problems effectively?

This report draws together evidence from the literature and from a number of case study organisations to examine the good practice principles underlying the effective management of work based problems.

It moves away from traditional and sometimes vague concepts of stress and stress management, to propose a pragmatic, problem solving framework. This facilitates a systemic analysis and a better understanding of workplace issues.
