Education to employment transitions: support in 2024 infographics

Journeys through education and into employment are often non-linear and complex, and oftentimes people require additional support during periods of transition. This is particularly prominent among those with additional support needs, and groups who are at risk of marginalisation throughout education and employment.
These infographics are a result of research which aimed to identify and map the support available to four groups of young people who may experience disadvantage in education and employment, these were people with: special educational needs and/or disabilities; experience of the care system; mental ill-health; and/or experience of the criminal justice system.
A variety of ways of mapping the journey through education and into employment were explored. These infographics, based on trainline maps, were most successful as they are able to show four different routes, and include where the routes intersect and run parallel. Each stage of the journey is indicated visually using the zones concept also used on train maps, and there are more subtle parallels between support services such as disruptions to journeys, needing to use replacement services, and some routes being better resourced than others.
Five infographics were produced in total, a version showing all four journeys, and then one for each specific group of young people. The infographics can be downloaded below.
