Economist/Senior economist

The Institute for Employment Studies (IES) is a leading independent research centre for evidence-based research and consultancy, based in Brighton.  We provide insights on employment and human resource management topics to help improve policy and practice.

We work closely with government departments, agencies, professional and employee bodies, and employers. We are a registered charity, with over 40 multidisciplinary staff, plus UK and international associates.

We are looking to recruit economists and senior economists with strong quantitative skills.

The successful candidates will be expected to conduct quantitative analyses in the field of employment, labour markets, health and social policy. These roles involve analysis of data from both survey and administrative sources to estimate the causal impact of public policy changes and associated costs and benefits. Typically, projects estimate the effectiveness of programmes designed to overcome barriers to labour market participation and reduce inequality.

Applicants should have excellent academic qualifications in economics or empirical social sciences (preferably at Masters level or higher) and a good understanding of UK and European employment and social policy and related research evidence.

Higher-level applicants should have a high degree of numeracy and confidence in data handling with advanced statistical packages. Experience of carrying out cost-benefit analysis would be an advantage.

What we offer

We offer excellent benefits of:

  • 31 days’ holiday per year, plus bank holidays;

  • a contributory career-average defined benefit pension scheme (USS), to which IES pays a monthly contribution of 18 per cent of basic salary and you pay 8 per cent;

  • career progression and development opportunities;

  • a tailored induction programme; and

  • prospects for flexible working.
