A review of academic workforce planning for Universitas 21

Universitas 21, a leading global network of research-intensive universities that aims to 'foster global citizenship and institutional innovation', commissioned IES to review academic workforce planning 'to stimulate and inform strategic thinking of U21 University Presidents over the next 10 to 20 years'.

The report IES produced describes the issues affecting workforce planning in academia, how workforce planning and talent management operate in U21 institutions and what characterises workforce planning and talent management practice outside higher education.

IES gathered its findings through a literature review, access to examples of good workforce planning and talent management practice from a range of sectors, conversations with subject matter experts and interviews with senior HR staff within a sample of U21 institutions.

The results of the research were presented to U21 university vice chancellors and principals meeting in Glasgow.
