    There has been much concern over the productivity of the UK economy which, despite being the fourth largest economy in the world, has seen productivity levels gradually fall behind competitor nations. In part this has focused on the degree to which UK management capability is lacking in some way. This view has been supported by studies which have shown that UK managers tend to be less qualified and receive less training than others in Europe and elsewhere.

    NHS Learning Accounts - the NHSU project

    This publication is no longer available. The NHS Learning Account Scheme was introduced in April 2001 as part of a firm commitment to widen learning and development opportunities for staff without a professional qualification. NHSU set up a pilot scheme seeking practical ways of involving a wider range of staff in taking up their entitlement to an NHS Learning Account. A key aim was to open up progression routes to 'non-traditional' learners, leading to a better-trained workforce for the NHS as a whole.

    UK productivity has shown a relative decline since the late nineteenth century. This has caused policy makers to seek underlying causes and one of the most durable concerns has focused on skill levels in the UK. The most straightforward comparisons of qualification levels in the workforce for different countries demonstrate that the UK has lower skill levels than our competitor nations. This may therefore be a contributor to the productivity gap.
