This case-study report offers an in-depth look at the work of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust on its staff engagement agenda, and draws out the link between increased staff engagement and patient experience.

This is one of four IES case studies commissioned by NHS Employers, and is published alongside a briefing document which identifies common themes between the case study trusts.

The case study outlines the structure of the Trust and the importance of putting the service user experience at the heart of all its work. This is clear in the Trust's vision and values, developed in consultation with service users, carers, staff, governors and other partners. The case study report also outlines how the Trust involves staff at all levels in discussions about giving the best care to service users, whilst also valuing staff development, equality and diversity, and clinical leadership. The case study outlines how these areas have impacted on staff engagement scores, and offers advice to other trusts, drawing on this example.
