Knowledge Knibbles: Understanding and delivering total reward

Total reward has been a fashionable subject that risks suffering more hype than content. This Knowledge Knibble seeks to explain what total reward is and how it can be applied successfully in organisations.

In essence total reward is a concept that makes the important point that staff are not motivated purely by money or other extrinsic factors but also by intrinsic elements of work, such as satisfaction with the job or commitment to the purposes of the organisation.

However, in applying total reward to the workplace it becomes evident that the forces of motivation are not necessarily the opposite of demotivation, and that what attracts and retains people is different again. Moreover, individual reaction may not be uniform and their various dissimilarities may be groupable according to gender, age/length of service, contract type and ethnicity.

If total reward helps understand people’s (de)attachment to their employer, one of the challenges in applying the concept is communicating it in such a way as not to induce cynicism or disinterest. So this Knowledge Knibble will generate debate not so much about how to understand people’s feelings about work but how to use such insights for HR policy and people management practice.

In this Knowledge Knibble you will:

  • understand the meaning of total reward
  • know how to build a picture of the different ways staff connect to their organisation
  • review various communication approaches in reward and recognition
  • consider ways of applying this knowledge to HR policy and people management practice
